FISH LEONG

Fish Leong Biography
Name: Fish Leong
Real Name: Jasmine Leong
Chinese Name: 梁靜茹
Pinyin in Chinese: liang jing ru
Profession: Singer
Country: Malaysia
Birthday: June. 16, 1978
Blood Type: O

Fish Leong (Chinese: 梁静茹; Pinyin: Liáng Jìngrú; born June 16, 1978) is the stage name of Jasmine Leong, a Chinese Malaysian singer in the Mandarin pop scene who has had much success in Taiwan, Mandland China, Hong Kong, Malaysia , Singapore and Japan. She is best known for her love-themed ballads, many of which have become popular KTV hits.

Leong was born in Kuala Pilah, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia. Her real name is “Leong Chui Peng” (Chinese: 梁翠萍; Pinyin: Liáng Cùipíng). She started her career as a cover version singer at Hai Luo Music Cafe.

In her youth, Leong had participated in many local singing competitions and emerged as winners in a few of them. Veteran singer Jonathan Lee discovered her during a singing competition at Hai Luo. She was then singing a song called Qī Dài (期待) which was composed by her friend. She started her career in Taiwan in October 1997 after joining Rock Records of Taiwan. It was then that she adopted the name “Fish”, supposedly because of her salmon-like features. Her debut album Yí Yè Zhǎng Dà was released after two years, only to encounter an earthquake on the day of the album launch promotion (21 September 1999). Her career only managed to take off after the successful launch of her second album Yong Qì.

Leong has enjoyed collaborations with prominent Chinese songwriters and producers, such as Lee-Hom Wang and Ashin of Mayday, the latter being her fellow labelmate. She has also sung duets with fellow Malaysians and labelmates, Guang Liang, Pin Guan and Yu Heng. Her albums have been best-sellers in the East Asia region, including Singapore and Taiwan, where she is based. Since making her debut in 1999, Leong has released eight solo albums. Her best-selling album The Power of Love had sold in excess of 1.5 million copies in Asia and more than 40,000 copies were sold in Singapore alone. Wings Of Love, her seventh and double-platinum album, topped Singapore’s RIAS sales chart for two weeks and remained within the top 15 positions for more than two months. At the Singapore Hits Awards 2003, she was crowned the Best Female Vocalist. In 2004, she was presented with the Regional (Malaysia) Most Popular Singer prize at the same event. In 2005, she won the Most Popular Female Singer and Regional (Malaysia) Most Popular Singer awards. Her latest album is Silk Road of Love which sold over 1 million copies in asia. She is currently working on a world tour concerts series(including Taiwan, Mandland China, Malaysia and Singapore.

Jasmine Leong, a diva of sweet, soulful Mandarin melodies, was born in Kuala Pilah, Negri Sembilan, Malaysia on June 16, 1978. She is Cantonese, with her real name of Leong Chui Peng and her nickname of Fish. She started her singing career as a “cover version” singer, participated in many local singing competitions and emerged as a winner for a few of them. She began her career in Taiwan in October 1997 after joining the Rock Records of Taiwan and made her debut in 1999. She took Jonathan Lee, a noted musician, as her second “father” and she is now the No.1 female singer of the Rock Records. She burst into tears when she sang the song “Applause Sounds”, which made her recall her late father.

However, there is nothing fishy about Fish! She demonstrates a quality sound that has been missing in recent times amongst many performers. She sings like an angel, and each and every song makes you smile or touches your heart. Her voice is sweet, soft, smooth and inspiring, and the lyrics mostly encouraging, making you feel like you are roaming the clouds and floating endlessly in heaven. While she hits very high notes, she also maintains the feel of ease and relaxation. This makes her singing unique and beautiful.

Recently, she staged her long-anticipated “Love Parade” concert in Beijing Worker’s Gymnasium. It was the first time for her to hold a concert in the Chinese mainland. Organizers invited orchestral musicians to accompany her voice.

After that, the Taiwanese pop princess released her latest album Silk Road - Path to Love. It is brimming with romantic ballads including the title song “Silk Road” that offers a dynamic composition by singer/songwriter Wang Lee-hom and lyrics by A-hsin from the popular band Mayday. The meaningful song “Road” as well as “One on One” was tailor-made for her by famous Tanya Chua. With so many goodies assembled on just one album, she is sure to land another winner!

The photos in her “Power of Love Songs” album made a breakthrough over her former conservative image. And the sexiest picture she posed was in a silver bra top.

She is the karaoke pop queen with a very refreshing tune. I like many of her songs such as “Courage”, “Quiet Summer”, “If There Is One Day”, “Grown up in a Day”, “Happy Break-up”, and “My Love Lasts Longer Than Two or Three Days”.
