Writer Flannery O'Connor would have been 85 today. The Georgian died of Lupus at the age of 39 in 1964. She wrote two novels and numerous short stories. I think it's appropriate to mark the day with one of her quotes:
"Anything that comes out of the South is going to be called grotesque by the northern reader, unless it is grotesque, in which case it is going to be called realistic."
