President Obama has nominated Elena Kagan for the Supreme Court. She is the US Solicitor General and served as the Dean of the Harvard Law School.
She has never served as a judge, which is not a qualification for the position, but her written record is thinner than other candidates. Glen Grenwald has been outspoken about his reservations of her based on her public record, but James Doty dismisses those concerns as Kagan's advocacy for her clients.
There have been reports that Kagan is a lesbian, which were shot down by the White House. If she is an open lesbian, this would be a historic pick.
