I'm back from my trip. Thank you for your kind thoughts. Richard was a good friend and fraternity brother for over 30 years and I will certainly miss him. He fought pancreatic cancer for 15 months, but the fight is now over.
We scattered his ashes in the Caribbean off St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. That's right, I went to a funeral in the Virgin Islands. It was certainly sad, but Richard made sure we had fun. On Friday night, his favorite bar, a place for locals on the harbor, closed but for a celebration of Richard's life. There was lots of Caribbean food, an open bar, live band and many friends from the different parts of his life. It was a great opportunity to get to know other people Richard had touched. The next morning, we all boarded a party boat with mimosas and music at 9:00 AM. Nobody was shy about popping the corks. We cruised out to a beautiful cove and several people spoke. Then we scattered the ashes in the sea. Just when the tears started flowing, somebody cranked up the music and said "the bar is open!" Richard would not have wanted anyone to be sad. He planned it well.
