Rachel Maddow Takes on CNN and the Tea Party Express

If you watched the State of the Union Address on CNN, you were treated to the GOP response by Rep. Paul Ryan and also the "Official" response of the Tea Party Express delivered by Rep. Michele Bachmann.  In other words, CNN aired two responses by Republican members of Congress.  No other network aired the Bachmann response.  So, why did CNN do it?  Rachel Maddow digs deep:

Last night, Wayne Besen of Truth Wins Out appeared on Rachel Maddow to discuss Delaware GOP Senate candidate Christine O'Donnell and her deep involvement in the crackpot "ex-gay" industry, which takes troubled and desperate gay people and, for a price, promises to cure them of the gay.  It's all a lie and a scam, but Wayne can explain it much better than I can:



Besen also wrote the book Anything But Straight, which I have read and highly recommend. 

By the way, I loved his tie.    

All American Cocktails

What better way to celebrate American Independence than getting hammered with America's greatest invention, the cocktail?  OK, I have no idea if the cocktail was invented in America, but it was certainly perfected here during prohibition when bartenders had to add mixers to hide the horrible taste of the hootch.  What cocktail do I recommend today?  The one that honors America's greatest city, the Manhattan, made with American Rye whiskey.  Check out this article by Tony Sachs:

Ike Skelton Wants the Gay to Go Away

Frightened little man Democratic Congressman and Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee Ike Skelton is opposed to DA/DT repeal because he doesn't want mommies and daddies to have to discuss the gay with their kids. 

Rachel Maddow Eviscerates Rand Paul

Newly minted Republican nominee for Senate from Kentucky Rand Paul went on Rachel Maddow's show last night and she brought up his lack of support for the Civil Rights Act.  Watch:

Does he truly not see a distinction between turning away a customer because he's armed and turning away a customer because of the color of his skin?  Does he not understand that a business (like a bar) might have legitimate reasons for turning away a patron with a gun but never have a legitimate reason for turning away a person due to race?  Does he not think legislatures and courts can see that distinction?  In addition to dead eyes and an almost total lack of charisma, I don't think Rand Paul is very smart. 

He may not be smart, but he is scared.  He issued a statement clarification today in which he stated that he does not support repeal of the Civil Rights Act.  Read it here and smell the fear. Just a few hours later, a spokesman for the Paul campaign issued this statement:

 "Civil Rights legislation that has been affirmed by our courts gives the Federal government the right to ensure that private businesses don't discriminate based on race. Dr. Paul supports those powers."


This, of course, contradicts his statements on Maddow's show last night.  Paul's most passionate supporters love his commitment to unpopular beliefs.  One interview and he does an about-face. 

There is a reason why the GOP establishment did not support Paul's campaign.  They want someone who will win the general election without a truckload of controversy.  This is just the beginning of the Rand Paul crazy.  There is much more the Democrats can roll out, starting with his opposition to the Americans With Disabilities Act.  Picture a commercial with a sweet old lady, staggering across a huge parking lot with her walker because there are no handicap parking spaces.  Then imagine a precious little girl in a wheelchair, unable to go to school because she can't get on the bus.

Rachel Maddow Takes on FAIR

Last night, Rachel Maddow had on Dan Stein from the Federation for American Immigration Reform, AKA FAIR.  FAIR has taken credit for helping write Arizona's new immigration bill.  I give him credit for going on Maddow's show, but Rachel took him apart.  Note the look on his face when Rachel brings up The Social Contract at about 3/4 of the way through.  There are so few people in the media who actually ask tough questions without backing down that it's shocking and heartening to see journalism in action.
